The Journey to Glory

The Indian Cricket team can be said to have written the fairytale script for the 1983 World cup. At the time before the tournament’s beginning, the team did not have a reputation of a strong one, which can be considered when the results of earlier tournaments have been taken into account. But the players had a spine and passion that burned to make their mark.

  • Group Stage: India kicked off their campaign with a spectacular victory over the West Indies; the defending champions. This win was perhaps a signal of what to expect in the tournament. They later on saw off Zimbabwe, Australia and East Africa in the preliminary round to make it to the semi-finals.

  • Semi-final against England: As they got through to the semi-finals against a very strong English side, India proved themselves a complete team. Mohinder Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma showed great and tight batting along with good bowling which made that victory memorable.

  • The Final against West Indies: The day final at Lord’s on June 25, 1983, is a tale memorized in the history of Indian cricket. India, on the other hand, was bundled out for a meagre 183 and was now to face a powerful West Indies batting lineup. But, the Indian bowlers especially Kapil Dev along with Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal bowled out of their skins. The crucial moment which is especially highlighted is that of Kapil Dev taking the catch of Richards. India eventually dismissed the West Indies for 140 and thus became the champions.
