Relocate Or Remodel: Which Should You opt For?

People’s needs change over time, and this is true when it comes to your living space as well. Families may expand, needs may become different, and at such a point, you will be deciding on what is best for you and your family; to relocate to a new home altogether or remodel your existing home. According to professional real estate companies in Sri Lanka, before making the decision, you will need to ask yourself these questions.

Are we currently living in the right location, which is convenient to our lifestyle?

Can our current home accommodate our changing lifestyles and family growth?

Can staying in my current location make my life easier?

What are the costs involved with both options?

Once you have figured out the answers to these questions, you can have a family chat and decide on the best way forward.

What is meant by relocating?

Relocating means moving your family to a new location and a new home altogether. This can be a huge step for some families, as you will need to find a suitable location and suitable house with a floorplan that suits your family size and lifestyle, you will need to sell your current home by putting it up on the market etc. All these things can take a lot of time, and things can move rather slowly, which can sometimes be disheartening for some.

For some people, relocating may be the only or best option available. Here are some reasons why relocation may be better than remodelling.

More space: If your family is growing steadily, it may be easier to find a larger house for sale in Nugegoda or other cities on a bigger plot of land for sale than trying to expand your current home.

Upgrade: If you want to upgrade your current home and change your lifestyle.

New job: If you have just got a new job in a new location, then it may be more feasible to move house than trying to travel long distances on a daily basis.

Kids have moved out: Once your kids have grown up and moved out, you may feel there is no need for a large house and will want to scale it down a bit.

Relationship changes: When your relationships change it may be more advisable to move rather than trying to accommodate everyone in your current home. If you were single and living in an apartment but are hoping to get married and start a family, then it is definitely better to relocate to a new place, like a family home and start your new life.

Living closer to family: If you have elderly parents or other family, it might be better to move closer to them.

Lifestyle changes: Most people want a change ins scenery after some time, and if this is the case, then it is better to find a suitable home in a new location.

Change in income status: If you have gone through a drastic change in your income, then you may need to find a suitable home that can accommodate your new income level.

Neighbourhood changes: If your neighbourhood has changed drastically since you first oved in there, and it has become undesirable to live in that location, then moving out would be best.

Of course, relocating has its own pros and cons. Pros of moving to a new location include:

It gives you the feeling of a fresh start on life.

It opens up new opportunities in a new place.

Gives you the opportunity to move out of your comfort zone.

Some cons of relocation include:

It takes time to both sell your current home and find a suitable new one.

The logistics of moving can get rather overwhelming at times.

What is meant by remodelling?

Remodelling your home involves changing its structure, style or form. It could be that you are adding sections to it, or even changing how the current space looks. Some reasons for remodelling your home may include:

For increased comfort and enjoyment of your home.

To rectify any safety problems such as a leaking roof, cracked walls etc.

      To enhance its value.

To enhance a home’s functional capabilities and increase efficiency.

      To upgrade its design style.

If you are thinking of putting it up for sale.

While renovating or remodelling your home may be the best option available to you under the above scenarios, there are certain pros and cons to this as well, which will need to be considered. Some of the pros include:

You can carry out the renovations whenever you want to, and perhaps do them one section at a time.

You don’t have to go through the hassle of looking for a buyer to sell your home.

Moving to a new location will not be required.

At the same time, there are some cons to renovating too, such as:

Remodelling can be highly stressful, especially getting the required approvals, getting contractors etc.

You have to live in a home that is under construction, or rent out a place until the renovations are done (this can be an added expense).

You may have to go through certain inconveniences until the house is fully done.

Sometimes the cost involved may be much higher than buying a new place, as material costs, labour costs etc can increase over a short period of time.

As you can see, there are positives and negatives to both options, and what you choose to do will depend on your unique requirement and your current situation with regard to life, finances, employment etc. It is always good to keep your options open and weigh out the pros and cons properly before making a final decision.
