Benchmarking can help identify areas where improvements can be made and opportunities for cost savings. It also helps to identify new technologies that may be available to reduce energy consumption or other costs. The process begins by identifying comparable buildings that are similar in size, age, location and number of occupants. The benchmarking team then collects data from each building to determine how much energy is used per square foot per year, gallons per day or kilowatt hours per square foot per month. Benchmarking also includes evaluating the efficiency of the HVAC system and its impact on energy use as well as evaluating lighting systems and their impact on energy use.
