PlayStation VR2 App Launching on Steam for PC Compatibility

The official Steam app for the Sony PlayStation VR2 is set to launch on August 7, enabling headset owners to play VR games on the popular Valve-owned distribution platform. Sony previously announced that the PS VR2, which launched at a price of $549.99, would require a special adapter for use on PC. Released in February 2023 as an accessory for the PlayStation 5, the PS VR2 features enhanced hardware and advanced technologies compared to the original PlayStation VR.

While it has been recognized as a capable VR headset, this latest version did not achieve the same sales success as its predecessor, leading Sony to pause PS VR2 production until it could address its backlog of unsold units. Recently, the company indicated a shift in strategy for the PS VR2 by announcing PC support, a move that has been well-received by the gaming community. This app will allow users to play VR games and applications on Steam using the PS VR2, as well as set up their headset on PC, update firmware, and adjust settings. In addition to the headset and Sense controllers, players will need a $59.99 PS VR2 PC adapter, which will also be available on August 7. The Steam page outlines the minimum system requirements for the PS VR2 App, which include an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 700 MB of storage space, and an Nvidia GTX 1650, AMD RX 5500 XT, or AMD RX 6500 XT graphics card.

For optimal performance, it is recommended that users have either an RTX 3060 or an RX 6600 XT. The app will require AMD CPUs powered by Zen 2 or newer architectures, while Nvidia GPUs should be from the Turing generation or later. Sony has cautioned that since the PS VR2 was designed specifically for the PS5, certain features such as HDR, headset feedback, and eye tracking will not be available when using the headset on PC. However, the PS VR2 will still support 4K resolution, a 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, and a see-through view on PC.
