Here are the 10 Amazing Spots to Explore in Macedonia
1. Lake Ohrid
Europe's oldest and deepest lake, Lake Ohrid, is famous for its crystal clear waters and serene atmosphere. Byzantine churches, cobblestone streets and brightly coloured markets are just some of the things that can be found in the town of Ohrid which sits along the shoreline. A must do is a sunset boat ride, as the Church of St. John at Kaneo rises dramatically from the water. It’s a place for nature and history lovers and a peaceful and picturesque destination.
2. Skopje
For me, this is the place where past and present collide in the most interesting ways. Within walking distance you’ll find neoclassical buildings, contemporary sculptures and century’s old Ottoman architecture. Charming cafés and artisan shops are found on a stroll through the Old Bazaar and modern monuments are found in the massive Macedonia Square. It’s quirky and vibrant and you’re constantly surprised.
3. Matka Canyon
Just a short drive from Skopje, Matka Canyon is a natural wonder. This canyon is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts known for its dramatic cliffs and emerald green river. Kayak along the river, explore caves like Vrelo one of the world’s deepest underwater caves or walk along in peace. This is a wonderful place to get away from the city and be back in touch with nature.
4. Bitola
Bitola is frequently referred to as the “City of Consuls” because of its long and graceful history. A neoclassical main street, Shirok Sokak, is busy with cafés. Heraclea Lyncestis, with its fine mosaics and ancient amphitheater, is located just outside the city. Because of its rich culture and lively city life, Bitola is beloved by those interested in history.
5. The park is Mavrovo National Park.
Macedonia’s largest national park, Mavrovo National Park is a paradise for adventurers year round. It’s a popular ski destination in winter, but in summer it draws hikers and campers to its alpine meadows and deep forests. Half submerged in the lake is the Church of St. Nicholas which also calls the park home, making for a hauntingly beautiful sight. It’s the perfect place for outdoor lovers.
6. Kratovo
A small mountain town built within the crater of an extinct volcano, Kratovo is home to a series of small fountains, churches and a town clock. Its famous medieval towers and stone bridges give it a special old-fashioned feel. Rustic houses are built on narrow streets and happy locals love to talk about the town’s bustling mining past. For travelers who like authenticity and tradition, it’s a great place.
7. Stobi
Stobi is one of Macedonia's most important archaeological sites, a thriving Roman city. The ruins of ancient theatres, temples and villas, decorated with intricate mosaics, are all there for visitors to walk among. Well preserved structures on the site give you a vivid glimpse into life in the Roman Empire. For anyone interested in classical antiquity and history, it’s a must visit.
8. Struga
Struga which lies on the north shore of Lake Ohrid, is a relaxing and poetic town. It holds the world famous Struga Poetry Evenings each summer, with artists and poets coming from around the world. Running through the centre of the town is the pretty Black Drin River with riverside walks and cafés. Because it is less crowded than Ohrid, Struga is perfect for a calm lake getaway.
9. Pelister National Park
Pelister National Park, with its imposing Baba Mountain and its twin glacial lakes, the 'Eyes of Pelister', lies just outside Bitola. Hikers, wildlife lovers and photographers love the park. Dense forests of unusual Molika pine trees are found here, trails wind through the forest to spectacular views at the summit. This is a place to be if you’re looking for an outdoor adventure away from tourist hotspots.
10. Kokino
An over 3,800 year old megalithic observatory known as Kokino remains a mystery. At an elevation of 1,000 meters, it provides views and a dose of ancient science. It was used to track the movement of the sun and moon, say archaeologists. Historically and spiritually interesting, the site is one that appeals to people who are fascinated by archaeology and cosmic mysteries.
Conclusion
Whilst not yet a mainstream tourist destination, that’s exactly what makes it so special.
