One day you feel like your shoulder limits the range of motion, even though there is no history of accidents, no injuries. You may have a frozen shoulder.

In this condition you feel stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint. It develops gradually and worsens later. Overtime you cannot move your joints. It usually affects people aged 40 and above, prevalence is more in women than in men.

Cause

Inflammation of the tissues in the joint, causes scar development in the joint capsule (adhesion), the capsule's fold becomes tightened and movement becomes restricted and painful. It is otherwise called adhesive capsulitis. Bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, stroke, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, tuberculosis, cardiovascular diseases cause frozen shoulders.

Symptoms

It has 3 stages of development.

  • Freezing stage – slight movement of your shoulder joint causes pain. Reduction in movement.

  • Frozen stage – stiff shoulder, slight difference in pain intensity

  • Thawing stage – begins to improve, usually within 1 to 3 years.

AYURVEDIC WAY OF EXPLANATION

Apabahuka is the term for frozen shoulder in Ayurveda. It occurs due to vata dosha, where we can see wasting of the shoulder as the preliminary stage. Kapha is also involved so the patient feels pain increases at the night time and with cold exposure. Injury to the marma (vital parts) around shoulder joint, exposure to wind, sleeping in wrong position, foods and activities which aggravates vata are the causative factors as per Ayurveda.
