Daily Inspiration: Meet Frank Greenfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Greenfield.

Hi Frank, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.

I am originally from the east coast… I studied Classical and Jazz guitar at Westminster Conservatory of Music and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where I fully immersed myself in the music scene. The game was a bit different then, and I found work doing studio sessions, arranging, and producing records. I had the opportunity to gig/tour with several iconic funk groups, and when those started to wind down, we started our own group, The Family of Funk, with some friends that I met along the way… That resulted in recent collaborations, which have now put us on the charts and built our brand into the fashion markets as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

It is never a smooth road… nothing worthwhile is ever easy… The music business can be very difficult to navigate. I have had a hearing disability most of my life, which affects my ability to communicate… Upon moving to LA. I knew just one person, and I was definitely an outsider, but I had a good business sense and a strong resolve… In the early days, I would be working on crazy deadlines in the studio, just running on empty all the time, but there was so much creativity happening, and I had no choice but to keep going… The music industry is always changing, and to stay relevant you have to adjust… I’ve always wanted to have a well-rounded career, producing, performing, arranging, and developing a brand… but with that, just like any business, there are struggles… of course, when you put a band together, that’s a whole different level… personality differences, substance abuse, fraudulent people, you name it, it’s there…

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Our group, The Family of Funk, is made up of world-class writers, producers, and musicians, with Gold and Platinum status, Grammy nominations, Dove Awards, BET awards, and A Golden Globe… We are a unique blend of Pop and Funk music, and most of all, we are family… that’s a word many people like to use, but we know each other, our struggles, our victories… myself and Waymon share the same birthday, and Mia and Sheree share the same last name… it doesn’t get closer than that…

What were you like growing up?

We were all musically inclined from a young age… Sheree, Waymon, and myself sang and played in church… Mia took voice and sang in her school choir. As I’ve gotten to know everyone, I found that our love for music goes way back… There were some other interests though, too… Waymon was a gymnast, and Mia and I are Martial Artists.
