The rank given to a newcomer or cadet at the National Defense Academy (NDA) in India is Cadet. The NDA is a tri-service academy that trains cadets for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Cadets at the NDA are typically between 16 and 19 years old and are inducted into the academy after completing the selection process, which includes a written exam, physical fitness test, and medical examination.

Upon admission, cadets receive training in academic subjects, military tactics, physical fitness, and leadership skills. They are also assigned to one of the three services (Army, Navy, or Air Force) and receive specialized training in their chosen field.

During their time at the NDA, cadets are addressed as "Cadet" and are not assigned a rank. However, upon graduation and commissioning into their respective services, they receive the rank of Second Lieutenant (in the Army and Air Force) or Sub-Lieutenant (in the Navy). The rank of Second Lieutenant or Sub-Lieutenant is the lowest officer rank in the Indian Armed Forces.
