Peripheral Neuropathic Pain (PNP) results from injury or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves, which include sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. This condition can be categorized as mononeuropathy (single nerve affected), mononeuropathy multiplex (several individual nerves affected), or polyneuropathy (widespread nerve involvement). These classifications assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing the disorder effectively.
Epidemiological Trends in Peripheral Neuropathic Pain
In 2023, approximately 33 million individuals across the seven major markets (7MM)—comprising the United States, the EU4 countries, the UK, and Japan—were affected by PNP. The United States accounted for the largest share, representing about 58% of cases. The EU4 and UK together made up 33%, while Japan contributed the remaining 9%. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy remains a key underlying cause, responsible for around half of the cases in the US.
