Great honor for the legendary Spanish filmmaker (74). The successful director will be honored at this year's San Sebastián Film Festival with the prestigious Donostia Award for "extraordinary contributions to cinema." The organizers announced this on Wednesday. In their reasoning for the decision, the organizers particularly highlighted his artistic talent and his courage in addressing topics from the LGBTIQ+ universe. The award ceremony is scheduled for September 26th, and the lifetime achievement trophy will be presented by British actress Tilda Swinton (63).

Following the ceremony, his latest film, The Room Next Door, starring Swinton and Julianne Moore (63), will be screened. This is Almodóvar's first film shot in English. The film will have its world premiere next month at the Venice Film Festival. The festival in San Sebastián will take place from September 20th to 28th.

Pedro Almodóvar is a Fan of San Sebastián

The filmmaker himself has personally awarded the Donostia Prize to cinema legends like Al Pacino (84) and Antonio Banderas (64) in San Sebastián and has been closely connected with the city in the Basque Country for many years. In a statement, the Spaniard said, "My career began in 1980 in San Sebastián, and since then, I have often returned to the festival, with or without a film." He always had a great time there. The city is a place with a great enthusiasm for cinema.

Pedro Almodóvar is considered the most famous Spanish filmmaker of contemporary cinema. In 2000, he was awarded both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for All About My Mother as Best Foreign Language Film. In 2019, he was already honored with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
