The Kedarkantha trek, with its pristine beauty and rewarding challenges, has ea
rned a reputation as one of the most sought-after treks in India. What sets it apart from other Himalayan treks is its accessibility during the winter months. Unlike many other high-altitude treks that become inaccessible due to snow, the Kedarkantha trail remains open for trekkers even in the harsh winter, making it a popular choice for both beginners and seasoned trekkers.
The trail takes you through dense forests, snow-covered meadows, and serene campsites that offer mesmerizing views of the surrounding mountains. The summit, at an elevation of 12,500 feet, provides an unparalleled view of the Har Ki Dun valley, Swargarohini peak, and several other majestic peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas.
The journey to Kedarkantha starts with a drive to Sankri, the base village. Sankri, located about 200 kilometers from Dehradun, is a small village in the Uttarkashi district that serves as the gateway to the trek. This village is the perfect starting point for your adventure and offers an introduction to the rustic beauty of the region.
On the second day, trekkers embark on the ascent towards Juda Ka Talab, a serene alpine lake situated at an altitude of 9,100 feet. This is one of the most scenic sections of the trek, with forest trails leading to a hidden, frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered trees. The lake provides an idyllic camping spot and is a perfect place to catch your breath after a day of hiking.
This day takes you through a forest of pine and oak trees, where you can enjoy the beauty of snow-laden landscapes. The route to Kedarkantha Base Camp offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks, and you’ll get a glimpse of the towering Kedarkantha Peak in the distance. Upon reaching the base camp, trekkers set up camp and rest for the night, preparing for the summit the next day.
The day of the summit is the most exhilarating part of the trek. Trekkers start early in the morning (around 3:00-4:00 AM) to reach the summit in time to witness the stunning sunrise. The climb to the summit is challenging but rewarding. Once at the top, the panoramic views of the Gangotri, Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Rupin mountains make every step worthwhile.
After spending some time at the summit, trekkers return to the base camp for the night.
On the final day, trekkers begin their descent back to Sankri. The downhill journey is relatively easier but still requires attention to the snowy terrain. Once back in Sankri, trekkers can relax and unwind after completing the trek.
The best time to go for the Kedarkantha trek is during the winter months, from December to April, when the trail is covered in snow, creating a winter wonderland experience. Winter treks are especially magical here, as the area is relatively less crowded compared to other treks during the peak tourist seasons of summer and autumn.
The Kedarkantha trek offers a variety of experiences. The route meanders through lush forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron, which are often blanketed in snow during winter. You will also pass through small remote villages like Sankri and Haati Pathar, where you can interact with the locals and experience their simple and humble lifestyle.
Along the way, trekkers get incredible views of some of the highest peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, such as Kedarkantha, Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Gangotri ranges. As the trail ascends, trekkers are rewarded with mesmerizing views of the valley below, making the journey incredibly satisfying.
While the Kedarkantha trek is categorized as moderate in difficulty, it does require a certain level of fitness and mental preparation, especially if you're trekking in winter. The cold temperatures, especially during the nights, can be quite harsh, so it’s crucial to carry warm clothing, trekking gear, and necessary equipment.
