The drug used in the new study, enclomiphene citrate, is a derivative of clomiphene citrate marketed under the name Clomid for the treatment of female infertility. Researchers at Repros Therapeutics in The Woodlands, Texas, and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston treated 73 men with "secondary hypogonadism." In this condition, low testosterone is caused by a problem with the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, not the testicles.

In the study, the drug increased testosterone produced in the testes, as well as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) produced by the pituitary gland, two other hormones important for reproduction.

However, the drug did not reduce sperm count in men because testosterone production in the testicles was never impaired.

But enclomiphene citrate, which Repros Therapeutics hopes to market under the name Androxal, is designed in a way that makes it more effective than Clomid at raising testosterone levels.

Ross noted in his editorial that enclomiphene citrate, or a broader family of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators, may help men who delayed fatherhood in their 0s and 50s and now suffer from low testosterone.
